Scott Butler joins Sphere Labs with over two decades of experience leading compliance, risk, and payments programs at the intersection of global banking and frontier technology.

Scott began his career in traditional finance, holding compliance and operations leadership roles at Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank, where he gained deep expertise in institutional banking, payments oversight, and risk management. That early grounding in regulatory rigor and enterprise-scale processes shaped the foundation for a career spent bridging legacy financial systems with next-generation payment technologies.

Before joining Sphere, Scott served as CEO and Chief Compliance Officer at Fiant (formerly Provenance Technologies Inc.), a cutting-edge payments platform serving blockchain and Web3 ecosystems. Under his leadership, Fiant secured nationwide money transmitter licenses, MSB registrations across the U.S. and Canada, and a New York BitLicense—one of the most comprehensive regulatory portfolios in the sector.

Previously, as Chief Compliance Officer at Linden Lab, Scott managed compliance, payments operations, anti-fraud, and information-security programs for Second Life—widely recognized as the world’s first metaverse and digital-goods economy. His leadership helped establish credibility with regulators and banks around virtual currency transactions years before blockchain entered mainstream finance.

At Meta, Scott designed and led the first regulated payments compliance program for a social network, guiding Facebook Payments Inc. through its foundational regulatory exams, developing AML and sanctions frameworks, and serving as the principal compliance advisor for the launch of peer-to-peer payments on Messenger.

Scott’s combination of big-bank discipline and frontier-tech innovation uniquely positions him to guide Sphere through its next stage of global scale—embedding safety, trust, and compliance excellence across every layer of the organization.
